Retaining Graduates of South Carolina Public Colleges and Universities

South Carolina Commission on Higher Education What happens to graduates of South Carolina’s colleges and universities? Do most stay in South Carolina or do they leave for other states once they earn their degrees? With significant investments being made in higher education, particularly through merit-based student financial aid programs intended to encourage enrollment and graduation from the state’s colleges, and the critical need for increased numbers of college graduates in South Carolina, these questions deserve evaluation.November, 2007

Lost in Transition: Building a Better Path from School to College and Careers

by Gene Bottoms and Marna Young In 2005 and 2006, the High Schools That Work program of the Southern Regional Education Board and the College and Career Transitions Initiative of the League for Innovation in the Community College convened a cross section of state education and policy leaders in 15 state-level forums. Forum participants were asked to identify ways to foster collaboration between secondary and postsecondary education systems and build successful transitions from high school to college and careers. This report summarizes the conclusions of the 15 state forums; identifies key barriers and policy issues; and recommends a series of state actions to ensure a new generation of knowledgeable and skilled citizens and workers are ready to pursue high-demand, high-skill, high-wage careers that can help sustain prosperity and economic growth.

Program aims to help ease transition to college work
The Post and Courier

by Diane Knich "On the academic ride from high school to college, the track doesn't quite line up, causing some students to derail in their early college years, state educators say. Clint Mullins, a program manager at the state's Commission on Higher Education, said professors who teach freshmen often complain that many of their students just aren't prepared for college-level work. But the majority of high school teachers say they're doing all they can to prepare students for college. A new statewide project is looking for ways to give students "a seamless transition" from high school to higher education, Mullins said. "We'll be looking at the disconnect between the two systems."
